Prediction Markets Crack Down on Insider Election Bets

October 27, 2026 • 2 min read

Polymarket is ramping up its efforts to scrub insider trading and market manipulation from its platform as anticipation builds for the upcoming midterm elections. Shana Bautista, the company’s head of global intelligence and investigations, revealed that her team has already probed dozens of suspicious election-related bets. Some of these inquiries have escalated beyond internal reviews, with reports indicating that at least two cases have been referred to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission for further regulatory action.

The crackdown comes amid a surge in popularity for prediction markets, though the growth has brought intense scrutiny regarding the integrity of the democratic process. Lawmakers and critics worry that those with private access to internal polling or campaign strategy could unfairly profit by betting on their own candidates. This concern isn’t theoretical; rivals like Kalshi have previously fined candidates for betting on themselves, while separate reports suggest campaign staffers may have already pocketed thousands of dollars using nonpublic information.

To combat this, Bautista, a former FBI official, has implemented a sophisticated surveillance system that processes gigabytes of data from social media, banking partners, and Federal Election Commission filings. While some users operate anonymously via cryptocurrency on Polymarket International, Bautista insists that true anonymity is a myth and that her team can almost always trace transactions back to a real identity. Her system triggers hundreds of daily alerts whenever user behavior matches patterns typical of market manipulation seen in traditional finance.

Despite these aggressive internal measures, experts warn that election markets carry unique risks because they can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Economics professor Rajiv Sethi notes that if a market suggests a candidate is losing momentum, it can actually influence voter perception and shift real-world outcomes. For now, much of the responsibility for policing these volatile digital arenas falls on the companies themselves, as federal regulators have taken a relatively hands-off approach during the industry’s rapid expansion.
